I never thought homelessness could happen to me. Due to a family crisis, my life radically changed. Homelessness affected every area of my life. The biggest struggle I had during my experience in homelessness was employment.

I do not have any addiction or mental health issues, which the stigma of homelessness carries. I was a hard-working middle class American, striving to be a good parent to my younger sister. When I became homeless it was hard for me to accept. I lost my self-esteem and struggled to confide in anyone.

Then I met Kathrine Brown. She encouraged me that my poverty experience was only temporary based on the mindset I maintained. I was extremely discouraged with employment and almost gave up, but within the first week of meeting Kathrine, I was employed.

Due to my economic situation, I was unable to afford clothing for my first day of work. I was embarrassed to ask for help, but Ms. Brown understood. The next day, she provided me with the necessities I needed to start work. I later realized Ms. Brown purchased the items out of her own pocket. I will never forget Ms. Brown’s investment in me because she went above and beyond for a stranger, and she did not have to.

I appreciate that Ms. Brown is knowledgeable in crisis intervention and had the wisdom in how to apply her knowledge on a case-by-case basis.

My story was uniquely different because I am raising my youngest sibling, and I was able to gain custody of her. I am currently housed, and I am working full-time. I realize homelessness does not discriminate, it can happen to anyone, even everyday people like me or you.”
